Ryan Poles’ Lack of Concern Regarding Bears’ Limited Draft Picks…
The Chicago Bears have displayed a relatively restrained approach to free agency this year, with their acquisitions lacking major star power. While Kevin Byard is set to reinforce the free safety position, D’Andre Swift is anticipated to play a significant role as a running back, and Coleman Shelton is poised to take on the center position.
Despite these additions being serviceable, fans are expressing concern over the absence of marquee signings. As the team enters its third year of rebuilding, expectations typically incline towards intensified efforts to bolster the roster. However, General Manager Ryan Poles has not followed this trend.
Since assuming his role in 2022, Poles has consistently articulated his strategy of prioritizing the draft for team-building. While this approach is commendable, there are doubts regarding its execution this year.
Recent trades involving Montez Sweat and Ryan Bates have left the Bears with just five remaining draft picks. Even though two of these picks are within the top 10, the team still faces depth concerns that may not be adequately addressed with only five selections.
While such circumstances might instill anxiety in most, Poles remains unfazed, drawing from past experiences.
Ryan Poles is adept at engineering flexibility. When he initially took over as Bears GM, he was confronted with a mere five draft picks, including no first-rounder. Rather than succumbing to this constraint, Poles took proactive measures. He orchestrated a trade with Los Angeles, exchanging Khalil Mack for second and sixth-round picks.
Additionally, during the draft itself, he orchestrated multiple trades, consistently moving down in the later rounds to accumulate additional selections. Ultimately, the Bears expanded their draft capital from five to 11 picks.
Considering his previous success in leveraging trade-down strategies, one can only speculate about Poles’ potential with two first-rounders, a third-rounder, and two fourth-rounders at his disposal. Furthermore, there’s the prospect of acquiring more picks through a potential trade involving Justin Fields.
Poles possesses more flexibility than commonly perceived. He harbors no hesitancy in trading down in the draft to accrue supplementary picks, and it appears probable that he will employ this tactic again this year. The only uncertainty lies in the timing of these moves, not their eventuality.
For Bears enthusiasts, the challenge lies in awaiting Poles’ forthcoming maneuvers.
