Mousinho: A Unique Challenge, Not a Simpler One
Manager Anticipates Burton Clash

A quick glance at the League One standings reveals five teams in a genuine battle for automatic promotion to the Championship. Portsmouth is leading the pack, but they are yet to face the other contenders – Peterborough, Barnsley, Derby, and Bolton.

Despite their top position, John Mousinho warns against underestimating the challenge ahead of tonight’s match against Burton at Fratton Park. Burton currently hovers just above the League One relegation zone, and Mousinho believes this makes them a formidable opponent.

The manager stated, “Facing Burton will present us with a different kind of challenge, but that doesn’t mean it will be any less difficult. In fact, it might prove to be tougher, considering their strong performance against Peterborough last weekend, where they were unfortunate not to secure a point.”

Mousinho emphasized Burton’s organization, ability to counterattack, and threat from set-pieces. Despite their lower league standing, he stressed the importance of maintaining full focus throughout the game.

“We may need patience at times, as is often the case in football. Our approach should involve getting forward and delivering crosses into the box when opportunities arise,” Mousinho added. He dismissed any concern about a predictable pattern in their results against teams at the top or bottom of the table.

“In football, you play each team twice, and there isn’t necessarily a consistent pattern in our performances against both top and bottom sides. Our focus is on the fact that we’re in a favorable position with nine games left in the season,” Mousinho explained.

Addressing recent injuries, Mousinho provided updates on Callum Lang and Jack Sparkes, both of whom suffered ankle injuries in the previous match. Lang’s condition is better than initially feared, and he stands a 50-50 chance of featuring in the upcoming game. Jack Sparkes is fit and available, having recovered from a contact injury.

Mousinho also expressed optimism about the team’s improving health, mentioning the progress of players like Lee Evans, Zak Swanson’s return to the bench, and the positive development of Ben Stevenson.
