Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones praised striker Alfie May as “brilliant” following their 3-2 victory over Carlisle United. May, 30, scored twice in the match, taking his tally to 24 goals in all competitions this season, with 20 in the league alone.
Jones highlighted May’s intelligence and contribution both on and off the pitch, emphasizing his thoughtful approach to the game and his movement. He commended May for his consistency and advised him to keep making the right runs, which has paid off with May scoring four goals in the last four games, indicating a positive turn in form.
May’s transfer to Charlton last summer from Cheltenham Town has proven to be a wise move for the club. Since joining Charlton in July, May has signed a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months. Despite the managerial changes at Charlton, May has remained a key player, demonstrating his goal-scoring prowess consistently.
Before joining Charlton, May scored 67 goals in 165 matches for Cheltenham and has also played for Doncaster Rovers. Jones sees May as a valuable asset for Charlton, especially considering his proven ability to score goals at this level.
May’s goals have been crucial in Charlton’s climb up the League One table, with the team now sitting in 14th place, 10 points clear of the relegation zone with eight matches remaining. Charlton’s next match is against Fleetwood Town, where May will aim to add to his impressive goal tally, currently leading the league’s top scorers ahead of Devante Cole of Barnsley and Jamie Reid of Stevenage.
