Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith was captured on new police video visibly shaken and emotional following a car accident that resulted in a 21-year-old man losing part of his leg. The victim is suing Highsmith, alleging that his careless driving caused the tragedy.
The video, recorded on a body camera from a Miami-Dade Police Department officer and obtained by TMZ, shows Highsmith in distress, putting his hands over his head, and being consoled by a woman at the scene. Highsmith told the officer that the car he hit was stopped and without lights on, a claim supported by other witnesses in the video.
Police documents revealed that Highsmith was driving 45 mph in a 40 mph zone and was issued a citation for careless driving. The accident occurred on February 6, following Miami’s game against the Orlando Magic. Highsmith did not play in the next game against the San Antonio Spurs but has been a key player for the Heat this season.
In 45 games, Highsmith is averaging 5.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game. He has been praised for his defensive skills and three-point shooting, hitting 36.8 percent from deep. Despite the legal challenges, Highsmith has been an important part of the Heat’s rotation and success this season.
The footage reveals Highsmith’s evident distress and regret over the accident, highlighting the emotional toll the incident has taken on him. The Heat are relying on him to maintain his performance as they aim for a deep postseason run.
