Breaking: Portsmouth Manager Explains Decision to Sign Midfielder on Free Transfer…

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has explained the rationale behind the acquisition of midfielder Lee Evans, who joins Fratton Park on a free transfer. The 29-year-old Welsh international terminated his contract with Championship side Ipswich in February and has committed to a deal with Portsmouth until the end of the season.

Mousinho justified the signing, citing the urgent need to strengthen the midfield due to injuries that have sidelined key players like Alex Robertson, Joe Morrell, Terry Devlin, Ben Stevenson, and Tom Lowery. With Marlon Pack and recent arrival Owen Moxon as the only fit senior midfield options, Mousinho emphasized the necessity for additional cover, leading to the decision to bring in Evans.

The Pompey head coach expressed his satisfaction with the new addition, highlighting Evans’ Championship experience and his contribution to promotion-winning teams in League One. Mousinho praised Evans as a seasoned footballer comfortable with ball possession and a robust presence in the midfield.

Evans, who underwent knee surgery for medial collateral ligament damage in September and last played for Ipswich on September 29, brings valuable experience, having been part of two League One title-winning teams with Wolves in 2013-14 and Wigan in 2017-18. Additionally, he played a role in Ipswich’s promotion campaign last season, scoring three goals in 23 League One appearances.
