Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco has indicated that a return to the team is a possibility for the upcoming season.
Despite being a free agent, the 39-year-old, honored as the Comeback Player of the Year, expressed his fondness for the Browns and his positive experience during the past season.
Flacco, initially signed to the practice squad, quickly rose to the starting position and finished the season as the NFL leader in passing yards and touchdown passes.
Flacco, determined to continue playing, expressed a desire to be on the field as long as a team is willing to have him. While he acknowledges that some decisions may not be entirely within his control, he remains committed to playing and does not plan on retiring anytime soon.
The Browns, reciprocating Flacco’s positive sentiments, have expressed their interest in having him back, with General Manager Andrew Berry stating that they would “absolutely love to have Joe back.” Berry also hinted at the possibility of Flacco returning in a backup role to Deshaun Watson.
However, if Flacco doesn’t return, the Browns are open to exploring other options. The team may consider Jacoby Brissett, a former backup quarterback who spent the previous season with the Browns. Brissett, who had a solid performance in the limited time he saw on the field, could be another potential option for the Browns if Flacco decides to sign elsewhere.
In the broader context, the Browns are actively looking to secure a reliable backup quarterback, recognizing the importance of having depth at that position.
General Manager Andrew Berry emphasized the significance of the backup quarterback role and indicated that the team would likely carry three quarterbacks on the roster moving forward.
