Breaking: NRL Issues Breach Notice to Penrith’s Hooker Over Off-Field Incident…

The NRL has formally issued a breach notice to Penrith Panthers’ dummy half, Mitch Kenny, in connection with an off-field incident that transpired in December.

Mitch Kenny, an experienced hooker with 83 games under his belt, recently assumed the role of the primary dummy half for the Panthers from the beginning of 2023, succeeding Apisai Koroisau.

Regarded by many as a potential future club captain, Kenny found himself amidst controversy when a photo surfaced on his Instagram story on December 26, accompanied by the caption “couple of Boxing Day lines have got me in trouble.”

Swiftly responding, Kenny removed the image and posted a clarification on his story, stating, “Happy New Year guys. Enjoy and ignore trolls who grabbed my phone. Happy New Year.”

According to the revised collective bargaining agreement introduced by the NRL and Rugby League Players Association in the 2023 season, the details of any penalty cannot be disclosed until five days after the player receives the breach notice.

Nevertheless, the NRL confirmed today that Kenny has been served with the notice, asserting that his actions “brought the game and club into disrepute.”

In an official statement, the NRL explained, “The National Rugby League (NRL) today issued Penrith Panthers player Mitch Kenny with a Breach Notice alleging a breach of the NRL Code of Conduct following an NRL Integrity Unit investigation into a social media post in December 2023.

It is alleged Kenny engaged in conduct which has brought the game and his Club into disrepute. Kenny has 5 business days to respond to the Breach Notice.”

The Panthers acknowledged receipt of the notice but refrained from providing additional comments, stating, “Penrith Panthers player Mitch Kenny has today been issued a breach notice by the NRL. Kenny has five business days to respond to the NRL breach notice. Panthers will be making no further comment on the matter at this time.”
