Toronto Raptors’ President Delivers a ‘Stunning Verdict’ as NBA Champion and Defensive Player of the Year Bids Farewell to Basketball

NBA champion and former Defensive Player of the Year, Marc Gasol, officially announced his retirement from professional basketball after a remarkable 13-year career in the NBA. The Spanish-born player began his journey with FC Barcelona and CB Girona before being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2007 as the 48th pick. A subsequent trade to Memphis, which also involved his brother Pau Gasol, proved to be a beneficial move for both parties.

Gasol made significant contributions during his decade-long tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies, earning three All-Star selections and securing the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2013. Midway through the 2018-19 season, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors, where his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities played a crucial role in the team’s journey to the 2019 NBA championship.

Raptors President Masai Ujiri praised Gasol’s impact on and off the court, highlighting his extraordinary vision and defensive skills that were instrumental in securing the championship. Gasol, a three-time All-Star, first team All-NBA, and two-time Olympic silver medalist, has left an indelible mark on the basketball world.

Following his stint with the Raptors, Gasol concluded his career with the Los Angeles Lakers before returning to Spain. A revered figure in Spanish basketball, he formed a formidable duo with his brother Pau, achieving success on the international stage with two FIBA World Championships and a EuroBasket gold medal. Additionally, Gasol clinched two Olympic silver medals in 2008 and 2012.

The Memphis Grizzlies have expressed their intention to retire Gasol’s jersey number 33, although the specific date for this honor is yet to be determined.
