Horrible! Senators Beat the Red Wings Despite Losing Sanderson…

In the final game of their four-game season series, the Ottawa Senators defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in overtime. In their season series, the Senators have won three straight games against the Red Wings after losing the opening game. This matchup between two teams who had developed a small rivalry over the season wasn’t the most thrilling overall. There are still a few things to sort out, though, like the Sens’ significant defensive loss.
In terms of scoring opportunities, this was a fairly even back-and-forth game despite the mere five goals scored. Erik Brannstrom gave the Red Wings their lone lead of the game early in the first period when he mishandled the puck to Joe Veleno, who then fed it to Daniel Sprong for a one-timer.

In the second half, the Senators scored twice. It was a Mark Kastelic deflection, to start. Shortly after Brady Tkachuk exited the box following his earlier penalty, he scored on a breakaway. The captain of the Red Wings tied it up once more in the third period. After a great assist from Thomas Chabot, Shane Pinto deflected another Senators ball, bringing the game to overtime. The Sens, who controlled the puck for the whole overtime period, deserved this pleasant reward.

All things considered, the Senators put on a fierce display and held their own against one of the most dominant teams of January (from “Red Wings’ hot streak continues, turning questions into answers,” The Athletic, January 18, 24). The Senators had to battle even harder to earn the additional point after a difficult break early in the game.
Despite winning the game, Jake Sanderson’s absence from the starting lineup for the second period cost the Senators dearly. Later on, a lower-body injury forced him out of the game for the remainder of it.
