MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred gave a powerful expression regarding the White Sox stadium plan in Crain’s Chicago interview

Major League Baseball’s commissioner, Rob Manfred, has expressed not only his endorsement but also his enthusiasm for the proposed new stadium for the Chicago White Sox, considering it potentially groundbreaking. In an interview with Crain’s Chicago, Manfred conveyed his support for the project after being briefed by White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.

“I’m supportive,” Manfred stated emphatically to Crain’s Chicago, emphasizing the transformative potential a new facility could have for the White Sox. The development comes on the heels of reports from the Chicago Sun-Times in January indicating that serious discussions were underway regarding the construction of a stadium on a 78-acre property in the South Loop.

Manfred highlighted the advantageous location of the proposed stadium, particularly its proximity to downtown Chicago, as a positive aspect of the plan. However, he clarified that the MLB would not make a formal ruling on the proposal. The crucial details of whether the stadium would be publicly funded or financed privately remain undisclosed.

Regarding financial assistance, Manfred asserted that while MLB wouldn’t directly contribute to the stadium’s financing, there could be indirect support through subsidies. The commissioner’s positive response to the proposal, as reported by Crain’s Chicago, carries significant weight, especially considering recent speculations. Notably, the White Sox confirmed that Reinsdorf had a meeting with the mayor of Nashville during the winter meetings in December, fueling rumors about a potential move. The nature of the discussions in Nashville was not disclosed by the White Sox, leading to widespread conjecture. Manfred’s endorsement of the new stadium proposal could reshape the narrative surrounding these speculations and signal a positive direction for the White Sox’s future venue plans.
