Carlisle United Manager Reveals Plans to Upgrade Squad Before Transfer Deadline…

“Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson is looking to streamline his squad before the upcoming transfer deadline, acknowledging an excess of players in the team.

Despite an ongoing interest in signing another striker, recent recruitment efforts have resulted in an overpopulated squad. Simpson sees the current numbers as a potential issue and is hopeful that inquiries for some fringe players will materialize.

Simpson revealed, “There have been a few tentative inquiries for a few of our players,” emphasizing the need to reduce the squad size. With 26 outfield players in training last Friday, the addition of Josh Emmanuel and the return of JJ Kayode will further increase the count to 28, which Simpson deems excessive. He acknowledges the challenge of finding the right balance, stating, “When you have too many, that gives you a problem, and when you have too few, you have a problem.”

The manager expressed a desire to trim the squad and make necessary adjustments, acknowledging that it’s crucial to strike the right balance. Simpson mentioned that if they can’t find suitable moves for some players, they will continue working with them until the end of the season, reassessing the squad for future improvements.

The possibility of player departures could hinge on the interest from clubs like Portsmouth in Owen Moxon, with the midfielder potentially leaving before the transfer deadline. Carlisle United has already made six first-team additions in the January window, and Simpson is hopeful for a seventh addition, particularly a striker with strong physical attributes.

Despite earlier hopes that loanee JJ Kayode from Rotherham United could fulfill the team’s attacking needs, injuries have limited his appearances. Simpson stressed the need for additional attacking reinforcements, citing concerns about the team’s goal-scoring record. He expressed disappointment over JJ’s prolonged absence due to injuries, emphasizing the importance of finding another striker to bolster the squad for the remaining 17 games of the season.”
