Former Yankees Star Finally Joins Los Angeles Side on One-Year Deal Amid Yankees’ Financial Commitment…

Former Yankees standout Aaron Hicks has agreed to join the Los Angeles Angels on a one-year deal, marking the team’s first move in the offseason market.

Following the departure of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, the Angels had been relatively quiet until now. Hicks, a seasoned outfielder, has signed a league minimum deal of $740,000.

The addition of Hicks adds depth to the Angels’ outfield, which already features players like Mike Trout, Jo Adell, Taylor Ward, and Mickey Moniak. While Hicks is unlikely to alter Trout’s position in center field, it could impact Adell’s development significantly.

Hicks, known for his switch-hitting abilities, has primarily played in center field throughout his career. This move may offer the Angels flexibility to explore trades involving their outfielders for a hitter or starting pitcher.

The specific direction the Angels will take in future moves remains uncertain, but GM Perry Minasian has expressed confidence in acquiring Hicks.

Minasian highlighted the importance of players who can play multiple positions, praising Hicks for his versatility. According to Minasian, Hicks played center field for the Baltimore Orioles last year, demonstrating his ability to contribute in various ways.

Despite leaving the New York Yankees, Hicks remains under their payroll until the 2025 season due to a seven-year, $70 million extension agreement. The Yankees will continue to pay Hicks approximately $9.5 million throughout the 2024 and 2025 seasons, with a $1 million buyout for a club option in 2026.

This commitment means the Yankees are still financially responsible for $19 million, even though they cut ties with Hicks in May 2023.

Hicks faced challenges with the Yankees in the early part of the 2023 season, resulting in inconsistent performances and criticism from fans. With a batting average of .188, he was designated for assignment before being picked up by the Baltimore Orioles. In Baltimore, Hicks experienced a resurgence, batting .275 and contributing to the Orioles’ postseason berth.

As the Angels enter the post-Ohtani era, they hope that the addition of Hicks will bring valuable contributions and contribute to a positive 2024 season.
