No matter how far the Lions’ popular quarterback leads the team in the postseason, an extension with Jared Goff will come eventually…

Hockey games are breaking out amidst Jared Goff chants nationwide in Michigan, where the hometown Detroit Lions are attempting to win their first conference championship game in the history of color television.

In Michigan, it seems as though Goff, the starting quarterback for the Lions, is the talk of the town. It’s obvious the state and city adore him. The Lions may even extend his contract in as little as seven weeks to further demonstrate their admiration for him.
There’s little reason to doubt that an agreement will be finalized well in advance of the 2024 season, as sources close to CBS Sports indicate that both Goff and the Lions are keenly interested in signing an extension this offseason.

According to one insider, “[The Lions] are fully sure he wants to be there.”

Speaking with sources revealed a few things, including the fact that Goff won’t be very concerned about his position on the compensation scale, even though the quarterback position is undoubtedly important. The quarterback market reset three times this past offseason, with Joe Burrow topping the pack at an average annual value of $55 million. With his immense power over the Dallas Cowboys this summer, it’s feasible Dak Prescott surpasses that, and there’s no doubt the NFL is getting close to having its first quarterback worth $60 million.
It’s reasonable to expect that Goff’s next extension will average in the 40s, but it may be challenging to forecast the specifics and extras on a deal involving an experienced quarterback. The Lions may be able to close the deal before the league season begins on March 13 if they want to get the expensive thing out of the way early.

Just before the 2019 season got underway, Goff, a former first overall pick, inked a four-year, $134 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams started to second-guess the decision during the 2020 season, and they dealt Goff and a bunch of selections to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford not long after. The following season, the Rams prevailed in the Super Bowl, but Goff began establishing a new life for himself in Detroit.
With two years remaining on his contract, Goff had hoped for an extension throughout the winter, but the Lions decided not to pursue such discussions in earnest prior to the 2023 campaign. In the third round of the draft, Hendon Hooker was also selected by the Lions. Given that Goff has had another strong season and the Lions are as far into the playoffs as they have been since George H.W. Bush was president, Detroit may wind up losing money as a result of their choice to withhold payment from Goff during the previous offseason.

Whatever time the team decides to start its offseason, Detroit will have a lot of decisions to make. The Lions need to decide who will be their next offensive coordinator before they sign any player contracts. Ben Johnson is the front-runner for the Commanders’ head coaching position. However, Detroit may decide to go with an internal option, such as Tanner Engstrand, the coordinator of the passing game, or associate head coach Scottie Montgomery. With at least 17 new offensive coordinators entering the NFL this cycle, Detroit may also enter the external candidate pool.
Amon-Ra, wide receiver, This offseason, St. Brown, defensive tackle Alim McNeill, and right tackle Penei Sewell are all available for extensions. Sewell and St. Brown recently finished as members of the first team All-Pro.

Entering his final year of a contract that he signed in 2020, left tackle Taylor Decker will be significantly underpaid in 2024 compared to his market. His average yearly worth lags behind the top of the market now by around $10 million.

Additionally, in March, safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, guard Graham Glasgow, and guard Jonah Jackson are scheduled to become free agents.

For now, the Lions are enjoying the ride, and they aim to continue it for another two weeks into Las Vegas. This squad will soon have to make some important decisions, but it is certain that the big quarterback deal will be resolved in due course.
