Why Former Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Agrees to Contract with Los Angeles Angels…

The Los Angeles Angels have secured another relief pitcher for their roster during this offseason, reaching an agreement with a pitcher who was previously with the Philadelphia Phillies.

As the Philadelphia Phillies finalize their roster ahead of the 2024 season, they have various avenues to explore. While their bullpen has apparent needs, their primary focus has been on the starting pitcher market, where they have been closely monitoring developments. Although no significant moves have been made in that regard, the Phillies did manage to acquire a former first-round talent from the Atlanta Braves.

Speculation arose about potential reunions with former players Hector Neris or Matt Moore, considering their pitching profiles align with Philadelphia’s requirements. However, any possibility of reuniting with left-handed pitcher Matt Moore has been ruled out. Reports indicate that Moore has agreed to a one-year, $9 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels, as revealed by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Moore, aged 34, joined the Angels last offseason and delivered an impressive performance, boasting a 2.66 ERA in 41 appearances. Despite his success, he became part of the Angels’ payroll reduction strategy when their playoff hopes dwindled, leading to him being placed on waivers.

Claimed by the Cleveland Guardians, Moore had a brief stint before being waived again after five games and subsequently picked up by the Miami Marlins. Moore initially signed with the Phillies before the 2021 season, marking his return to Major League Baseball after a year with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball in 2020. Unfortunately, his performance with the Phillies that season fell short, recording a disappointing 6.29 ERA in 24 appearances and 13 starts.

The following year, Moore transitioned to a full-time reliever role with the Texas Rangers, showcasing exceptional skills with consecutive impressive seasons and earning recognition as one of the premier left-handed options in the game with ERAs of 1.95 and 2.56.
