The 2023 NFL Executive of the Year is Brad Holmes, executive vice president and general manager of Detroit, whose personnel decisions enabled the Lions to win their first division championship since 1993.
In 2023, Holmes led the Lions back to the NFC’s third seed and a division championship. Detroit finished the season with a record of 12-5, which tied for the most wins in Lions history. most the first time since 1962, the Lions did not lose a game straight through the course of the season. They were 6-3 on the road, tying a franchise record most road victories. For the first time since 1997, the Lions also won seven games by a score of ten points or more. The Lions signed nine free agents in the off-season, one of whom being linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who was selected for the 2023 PFWA All-NFC special teams. Three players selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Lions were running back Jahmyr Gibbs, a first-round pick; linebacker Jack Campbell; and tight end Sam LaPorta, a second-round selection. The first pair of rookie teammates in the NFL to score ten or more touchdowns in a season are Gibbs (11 touchdowns) and LaPorta (10). Since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970, the Lions’ 2023 rookie class is the first to record a combined 10 receiving and 10 running touchdowns. Drafted during Holmes’ first season as head coach in 2021, tackle Penei Sewell was chosen for the PFWA’s All-NFL and All-NFC squads. Since the award’s inception in 1993, Holmes and the Lions are the recipients of the inaugural PFWA Executive of the Year Award.
After playing football for four years, Brad Holmes graduated with honors in 2002 from NC A&T with a degree in journalism and mass communication. In 1999, he played two seasons as a defensive tackle and was a part of NC A&T’s victories in both the MEAC and the HBCU National Championship.
