Patriots’ New Head Coach Jerod Mayo Eyes Offensive Coordinator Candidates from Sean McVay’s Coaching Tree…

Jerod Mayo, the newly appointed head coach of the New England Patriots, is initiating the search for an offensive coordinator by arranging interviews with two coaches affiliated with Sean McVay’s coaching philosophy.

Having named Mayo as the successor to Bill Belichick, the Patriots are now focused on completing their coaching staff, with the offensive coordinator position being a top priority. Mayo appears to be inclined towards selecting a young and promising coach for this role.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that Nick Caley and Zac Robinson, both currently serving as assistants on Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams staff, are scheduled for interviews for the Patriots’ offensive coordinator position. Notably, both Caley and Robinson have previous ties to New England in their coaching careers.

According to Breer’s sources, Mayo will conduct interviews with Caley and Robinson during the week. Caley, who coached in New England from 2015 to 2022, will be interviewed first, followed by Robinson, a former Patriots player in 2010.

Drawing from Sean McVay’s coaching tree is often considered a wise decision, given McVay’s success as a head coach and the consistent performance of his offensive scheme. Mayo’s interest in coaches familiar with this system suggests a potential transformation in the Patriots’ offensive approach for the upcoming season.

Caley and Robinson are regarded as top-notch assistants with strong potential for promotion this offseason, making them sought-after candidates for offensive coordinator positions across the league. The Patriots, however, face competition, as Robinson is set to interview with two other teams before New England’s consideration.

The outcome of Mayo’s decision will significantly influence the future direction of the Patriots, indicating a potential shift in their offensive strategy for the upcoming season.
