Braves Secures a $5M Deal with Top Prospect in 2024 International Signing Period…

On the opening day of the 2024 international signing period, the Atlanta Braves secured a significant deal with shortstop Jose Perdomo, agreeing to a $5 million bonus.

This marked the highest amount for any Venezuelan-born international amateur player during this signing period. Perdomo, a 17-year-old talent, held the impressive rank of the third eligible prospect according to MLB.com.

In a notable transaction, Leo De Vries, the top-rated prospect, reached an agreement with the San Diego Padres for a $4.2 million bonus. De Vries, who celebrated his 17th birthday on October 11, showcased his promising talent.

Vladi Miguel Guerrero, an outfielder/infielder and the son of Hall of Fame slugger Vladimir Guerrero, along with being the half-brother of Toronto star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., sealed a deal with the New York Mets. The Mets also finalized an agreement with the sixth-ranked prospect, catcher Yovanny Rodriguez, for a sum of $2.85 million.

Several other players received substantial bonuses exceeding $2 million. These include Dominican shortstop Joseph Dawel, who secured $3 million with the Seattle Mariners, Venezuelan outfielder Victor Hurtado, who signed for $2.7 million with the Washington Nationals, Dominican outfielder Adolfo Sanchez, who agreed to $2.7 million with the Cincinnati Reds, and Dominican shortstop Joswa Lugo, who inked a deal with the Los Angeles Angels amounting to $2.3 million.

The eligibility for signing during this year’s period extends to players born between September 1, 2006, and August 31, 2007, with the signing period concluding on December 15. Teams have signing bonus pools ranging from approximately $4.65 million to about $7.1 million. Importantly, signing bonuses of $10,000 and under do not count against a team’s cap.
