The possibility of Bill Belichick becoming the head coach for either the Dallas Cowboys or the Philadelphia Eagles next season is not as far-fetched as it may initially seem.
Speculation arises from potential shortcomings in the current coaching regimes of Mike McCarthy for the Cowboys and Nick Sirianni for the Eagles during the NFL playoffs.
In Dallas, the Cowboys may lose defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to a head coaching position elsewhere, and a playoff failure could put McCarthy under scrutiny, especially given the high expectations of owner Jerry Jones.
Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, the Eagles, despite Sirianni leading them to the Super Bowl last season, have faced recent struggles, losing five of their last six games. The NFL is known for its “what-have-you-done-for-me-lately” attitude, and a poor performance in the playoffs might prompt changes in coaching staff.
Both the Cowboys and Eagles possess top-tier quarterbacks in Dak Prescott and Jalen Hurts, along with talented rosters, making them attractive destinations for the 71-year-old Belichick, who recently parted ways with the New England Patriots. Belichick, the NFL’s top free agent coach, is expected to take on a new coaching role in the 2024 season, according to Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
However, he is likely to be selective, avoiding long-term rebuilding projects. The Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons are rumored to be potential suitors, but their need for a quarterback and significant organizational overhauls may not align with Belichick’s preferences.
The Los Angeles Chargers stand out as a feasible option for Belichick due to their talented quarterback, Justin Herbert.
However, the Cowboys and Eagles, especially Dallas, emerge as particularly attractive options. If McCarthy were to be fired, the Cowboys’ coaching vacancy could become highly coveted, given their talented roster and organizational structure.
Jones could find himself with a remarkable list of coaching free agents, including Belichick, Pete Carroll, and Mike Vrabel. Additionally, the possibility of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin stepping away further adds to the potential pool of available coaching talent.
The situation is reminiscent of Bill Parcells, a good friend of Belichick, who concluded his coaching career with a four-year stint with the Cowboys. Parcells’ endorsement and guidance could prove valuable in navigating the intricacies of a new organization.
Belichick’s unexpected availability in the coaching market creates a scenario similar to Tom Brady’s free agency in 2019, where several teams vie for the services of an all-time great, potentially leading to changes in coaching regimes across the league.
The 2024 NFL offseason promises to be intriguing as teams consider the prospect of hiring one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport.
