Since assuming the role of the Chiefs’ starting quarterback in 2018, Patrick Mahomes has consistently led the team to top-six rankings in both yards and points.
However, this season marked a departure, with the Chiefs finishing 9th in yards and 15th in scoring during the regular season, a significant decline from their first-place standings in 2022.
Despite this, Mahomes expressed unwavering confidence in the offense’s ability to elevate its performance in the playoffs.
In a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the game against the Dolphins, Mahomes conveyed optimism not only about the offense but also the overall team dynamics.
He emphasized the impressive play of the defense, which contributed to the team securing the 2nd spot in both yards and points allowed this season.
Acknowledging the team’s offensive struggles, Mahomes outlined his belief that they can excel in crucial moments, suggesting that scoring enough points could allow their formidable defense to seal victories.
The team’s experience emerged as a key asset, especially given their participation in the last five AFC Championship Games, although Mahomes acknowledged the challenges that the playoffs bring.
While there are no guarantees of the offense rediscovering its regular-season consistency, Mahomes highlighted the team’s familiarity with high-pressure situations and the importance of drawing on past experiences.
He anticipated a smaller leap in performance going into the playoffs due to the team’s exposure to challenging games throughout the season.
Reflecting on his postseason record since 2018, Mahomes pointed out his impressive statistics, including a 67.3% completion rate, 4,084 yards, 35 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 14 playoff games.
Notably, his stellar performance in the previous year’s Super Bowl victory further underscored his belief that the team could rise to the occasion and play their best football when it matters most in the postseason.
