Former Carlisle United midfielder Jamie Devitt, celebrated as a cult hero, has embarked on a new chapter in his football career by joining Workington AFC, a Northern Premier League side, as an assistant manager.
This transition follows his tenure with Carlisle, where he played a pivotal role in Paul Simpson’s team that achieved promotion through the play-offs last season. Unfortunately, Devitt’s on-field contributions were limited to 14 appearances across all competitions due to various injuries during the promotion year.
Consequently, the club opted not to renew his contract, leading Devitt to sign with non-league side Workington in October. Despite leaving the playing field, he continued to support Carlisle in a scouting capacity.
Devitt gained prominence during his time at Morecambe, amassing 98 appearances, scoring 12 goals, and providing 31 assists. However, his most enduring legacy was formed during two separate spells with Carlisle, where he became a fan favorite known for his hard work and tenacity in the midfield. Across 151 appearances for the Cumbrians, he contributed 24 goals and 16 assists.
The recent announcement reveals that Devitt has not only transitioned into an assistant manager role at Workington but will also remain registered as a player.
In this new capacity, he, along with club captain Conor Tinnion, will serve as deputy to former Carlisle legend and manager Danny Grainger. This development arose following the departure of former assistant manager Terry Mitchell, who accepted a role with National League North side Darlington.
