Reds On the Verge of Reviving the Career of a Former Rookie of the Year Amid Offseason Strategy…

The Cincinnati Reds appear to have concluded their major offseason transactions with the recent addition of Frankie Montas, according to Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall.

While ruling out significant signings, Krall hinted at the potential for minor roster adjustments, particularly in the relief pitching department and fortifying the team’s bench. Despite not pursuing high-profile free agents like Teoscar Hernandez, the Reds might be in the market for a cost-effective platoon option to complement Will Benson and Jake Fraley.

As of now, it seems likely that either Stuart Fairchild or Jose Barrero will be the final addition to the Reds’ bench in 2024. However, there remains a chance that Krall could surprise with unexpected moves.

One intriguing option for the Reds to consider is Kyle Lewis, the former AL Rookie of the Year in 2020. Despite a decline in performance over the past few years, Lewis could provide valuable contributions. In 2021, he suffered a midseason meniscus tear, hampering his impact in 2022, leading to a trade from the Mariners to the Diamondbacks. After spending most of the previous season in Triple-A, Lewis was non-tendered by the Diamondbacks in the offseason.

Although Lewis had limited success in the majors last season, his stint in the minors showcased a notable resurgence, batting .371/.457/.641 with a strikeout rate below 20%. Additionally, he displayed a 13.3% walk rate and an impressive wRC+ of 164 according to FanGraphs.

With Lewis under team control through 2026 and possessing minor-league options, he could be a budget-friendly addition for the Reds, possibly signing for less than $2 million in line with Krall’s mention of minor signings to enhance the team’s bench depth.
