Shaun Mannagh, who has patiently awaited an opportunity at the AFL level for several years, is optimistic about making an immediate impact at Geelong. The decisive moment came an hour before the 2023 AFL Draft when Geelong recruiter Stephen Wells contacted him, signifying the end of a prolonged wait. Despite facing limited interest from recruiters over the years, Mannagh’s fortunes changed in 2023 when his outstanding performance in the VFL Grand Final earned him the Norm Goss Medal.
The versatile half-forward/midfielder’s journey from country footy to the VFL included stints at North Albury, Richmond’s VFL program, and Werribee. Despite setbacks and rejections, Mannagh persisted, showcasing his skills with Werribee in 2023 through consistent performances that caught the attention of AFL clubs.
Mature-age recruits like Mannagh often face a challenging path to recognition, playing on suburban grounds far from the elite AFL stadiums. His experiences include training with Richmond’s VFL program, winning a premiership with his local club, and relocating to the Northern Territory during the COVID-19 lockdown. Despite making strides in 2022, it wasn’t until 2023 that Mannagh garnered interest from AFL clubs.
Geelong, known for successfully recruiting mature-age players, considered Mannagh mid-season but opted for another player. Fremantle also expressed interest, but ultimately Geelong secured him at pick No.36 in the draft. Mannagh attributes his success to the influence of Michael Barlow, a mature-age recruit who became a development head at Arden Street. Mannagh believes in Barlow’s potential as an assistant coach in the future.
Having balanced a full-time job in education and married life, Mannagh has joined the ranks of Geelong’s draftees for pre-Christmas training. Despite his unique circumstances, Mannagh is determined to make his mark in the 2024 season, targeting a spot in the Round 1 lineup. He acknowledges the support from his former workplace and plans to settle near the club with his wife as he looks forward to seizing the opportunity he has patiently awaited.
