Vikings Projected to Replace $17 Million Pro Bowler With 1st-Round Pick…

The Minnesota Vikings are anticipated to replace their Pro Bowl edge rusher, Danielle Hunter, who is currently under a $17 million contract. Despite Hunter’s impressive performance with 15.5 sacks this season, concerns arise as he approaches 30 years old and becomes a free agent in the upcoming offseason. The Vikings, expected to have $39.3 million in cap space, might opt for a reset.

With Hunter’s potential departure, there’s a suggestion that Dallas Turner, a first-round pick and a reminiscent relentless edge rusher, could fill the void. Turner, standing at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, showcased his skills with 10.0 sacks this season, rebounding from a subpar 2022. Turner’s decision to enter the 2024 draft after a notable collegiate career at Alabama adds an interesting dynamic to the Vikings’ potential defensive lineup.

The Vikings, even if they manage to retain Hunter, face challenges in their pass rush department. Marcus Davenport, who had a disappointing season with 2.0 sacks, is also a free agent. DJ Wonnum, with 8.0 sacks, is recovering from a significant knee injury. The team’s need for an improved pass rush is emphasized, as Harrison Smith and Harrison Phillips, tied for third in sacks with 3.0 each, indicate a necessity for additional edge pressure.

To address these concerns, analysts propose that the Vikings may draft Oregon’s Bo Nix in the first round. Nix, a 2023 Heisman Finalist, offers a promising option with his impressive senior season stats of 77.4% completion, 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns, and three interceptions. While Kirk Cousins’ return is still uncertain, adding an experienced prospect like Nix could facilitate a smooth transition for the team in the future.
