Regardless of the coaching situation, the Patriots are in for a significant rebuild.
The 2023 season has been challenging, especially at the quarterback position, with Mac Jones struggling under the new offensive coordinator. While Bailey Zappe has shown improvement, the team is likely to seek a new quarterback in 2024. The offense, in general, lacks firepower, with Demario Douglas as the leading wide receiver and a notable absence of touchdown receptions.
Looking ahead to the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots are currently positioned to have the No. 4 pick, providing an opportunity to secure a top-tier quarterback. However, regardless of the quarterback acquisition, there is a pressing need for a standout wide receiver to rejuvenate one of the league’s weakest offenses.
In a recent proposal by Bleacher Report, the Patriots are suggested to trade for Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Tee Higgins. The proposed trade includes the Patriots sending a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 first-round pick to the Bengals in exchange for Higgins. While tag-and-trades are uncommon in the NFL, this proposal is seen as a unique option for both parties.
Higgins, who has demonstrated the potential to be a No. 1 receiver, could be an appealing addition to the Patriots. Despite being unable to negotiate an extension in September, the Bengals have ample cap space, making it feasible for them to use the franchise tag on Higgins and still explore a trade. The Patriots, in need of immediate wide receiver assistance, could benefit from acquiring Higgins to support a rookie quarterback like Drake Maye or Caleb Williams.
The proposed trade would provide the Patriots with a legitimate No. 1 receiver, addressing a crucial gap in their roster. With the Patriots’ second-round pick essentially serving as a late first-rounder and the 2025 first-rounder being an early pick for the Bengals, the trade could be a strategic move for both teams.
