Bucs Breaks Silence Regarding Russell Wilson’s Potential Move to Tampa Bay…

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are being considered as a potential destination for Russell Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback recently benched by the Denver Broncos.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin suggests that if the Buccaneers’ current starting quarterback, Baker Mayfield, decides to explore free agency after an impressive 2023 season, they might turn to Wilson as a replacement. Despite Mayfield’s success and mutual interest in a new contract, there is speculation about his potential departure.

The Buccaneers, having secured a playoff spot, won’t have an early pick in the 2024 draft. Their offensive coordinator, Dave Canales, previously worked with Wilson during a successful 2020 season with the Seahawks.

Wilson’s benching by the Broncos stems from the team’s recent struggles despite his statistical prowess, ranking among the top quarterbacks in various categories. The Broncos, currently 1-3 in their last four games, opted to start backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham after a disappointing loss to the New England Patriots.

The decision is also influenced by concerns about Wilson’s hefty contract, which doesn’t take effect until 2024, with a significant cap hit from 2025 to 2028.

If the Broncos release Wilson, the cost to sign him may not be exorbitant, given the financial commitments Denver would still owe him. Money may not be the primary concern for Wilson; instead, finding a team where he can start is crucial. Notably, Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales previously coached Wilson during his time with the Seahawks.

Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield, who signed a modest deal with the Buccaneers, has exceeded expectations and become a sought-after quarterback. Despite a challenging 2022 with three different teams, Mayfield has rebounded in 2023, ranking in the top 10 in various quarterback metrics.

His performance may make him a highly valued quarterback in the upcoming offseason, with an estimated valuation of $33 million per season by OverTheCap.

If Mayfield opts for a different situation, the Buccaneers may need to swiftly find a veteran quarterback to continue their playoff contention, with Wilson emerging as a potentially viable candidate if released by the Broncos.
