Mousinho Delivers a Shocking Claim Regarding Portsmouth’s Late Setback…

“Seemed more likely to emerge victorious” – Insights from Portsmouth manager Mousinho on their loss at Bristol Rovers…

Portsmouth experienced their first defeat in an away league match since March on Boxing Day, succumbing to a 94th-minute goal by Bristol Rovers.

Despite the setback, Portsmouth’s manager, John Mousinho, emphasized that he believed his team “appeared more likely to win” during their Boxing Day encounter at Bristol Rovers.

Their lead was challenged when Antony Evans scored a stylish free-kick just past the hour mark, putting Rovers in front. However, Portsmouth managed to level the score 10 minutes later with substitute Paddy Lane’s unexpected equalizer.

While Portsmouth increased their offensive efforts, the match seemed destined for a 1-1 draw, reminiscent of their earlier season encounter in August. Nevertheless, in added time, a well-executed play by Harvey Vale set up Luke Thomas to score the decisive goal.

This away defeat marked Portsmouth’s first in the league since March 7. Despite the loss, they maintain their position at the top of the table, holding a four-point lead over third-place Bolton Wanderers with a game in hand.

Reflecting on the match in a post-game interview with The Portsmouth News, Mousinho expressed disappointment over the late defeat, especially considering Portsmouth’s dominance in the final moments.

He analyzed the overall performance as fluctuating, acknowledging control in the first half but pointing out the lack of quality in the final third. Mousinho praised the team’s reaction after conceding the free-kick goal and believed they were poised to secure a victory after equalizing.

Mousinho highlighted moments of poor decision-making but rejected the notion that the defeat resulted from being too open and expansive. He concluded by expressing his intention to review the match closely. Portsmouth’s next challenge is an away match against Exeter City, while Bristol Rovers look to continue their ascent in the league table against Charlton Athletic.
