John Mousinho Reflects on Pompey’s Defensive Struggles and Squad Dynamics After AFC Wimbledon Defeat…

In the aftermath of Pompey’s 5-2 defeat to AFC Wimbledon, John Mousinho addressed the situation, emphasizing that despite the setback, it is not the time for an overreaction. The decision to make nine changes in the lineup, with only Joe Rafferty and Kusini Yengi retaining their positions from the previous victory against Shrewsbury Town, proved counterproductive for Pompey’s defense.

Mousinho urged caution and suggested that the team should accept the consequences of their alterations. The League One leaders, in an EFL Trophy tie, faced League Two opponents who also made multiple changes. Despite the opportunity for players to stake their claim for a place in the league team, most struggled to seize the chance.

Expressing confidence in the squad, Mousinho stated, “I still think we’ve got a strong squad, and that players can come in and compete in positions.” Despite the disappointing outcome, he emphasized that there won’t be drastic reactions and the team needs to acknowledge the defeat, attributing it to facing a well-organized side that played effectively.

Mousinho explained the selection challenges faced, particularly in the center-half position, and the makeshift defense that concluded the game. Due to injuries and limited options, Rafferty was moved to a right-sided center-half role in the first half. Mousinho acknowledged the lack of luxury with only three center-halves available and the decision not to risk Connor Shaughnessy.

He accepted the makeshift back-three of Denver, Ryley, and Harry, acknowledging the necessity to deal with such situations when making changes. Rafferty’s performance in an unfamiliar central defense role drew praise from Mousinho, who commended the player for adapting to the shift without complaint. Despite the challenges, Mousinho emphasized the need to move forward and learn from the experience.
