How Blackhawks Top Prospects are Making a Strong Case for Permanent Blackhawks Roster Spot…

Isaak Phillips showcased an exceptional defensive performance on Tuesday night, effectively shutting down Colorado’s top-line forwards.

Undoubtedly, he emerged as the MVP of the game, sending a clear message to Luke Richardson and Kyle Davidson that he deserves a permanent spot on the Blackhawks roster.

Phillips, a 22-year-old defenseman, emphasized his claim with a stellar display of lockdown defense throughout the match.

In a crucial game for an undermanned Hawks team, Phillips stepped up significantly, leading the first-line defense and ensuring a victory. Facing a formidable offensive threat from Colorado’s high-caliber forwards, Phillips demonstrated veteran-level defensive skills, rendering the opposing team’s top line ineffective.

Tab Bamford, a lead writer for Bleacher Nation, shared statistics highlighting Phillips’ domination over Colorado’s top offensive threats through two periods, a trend that persisted throughout the game.

Despite being sent back to Rockford on December 2, Phillips’ impactful return was particularly crucial in the absence of Kevin Korchinski, who took time away from the team to be with family after the passing of his father, Larry Korchinski.

Having been recognized as one of the Blackhawks’ top prospects during the offseason, Phillips had previously impressed during a call-up in November against Tampa Bay.

His recent standout performance strongly advocates for increased NHL ice time, and if he continues to deliver such performances, a permanent position on the Blackhawks roster seems imminent.

In addition to Phillips, goaltender Petr Mrazek played a pivotal role in the victory, making 35 saves with an impressive .946 save percentage. Mrazek’s outstanding saves, especially in crucial moments, limited the Avalanche’s goal total to 2. Meanwhile, forward Connor Bedard extended his point total to 28 in 31 games, contributing two assists in the game against Colorado. Although aggressive towards the net, Bedard couldn’t find the back of the net on Tuesday.

Looking ahead, the Blackhawks will face the Montreal Canadiens at the United Center on Friday, aiming to build on the momentum gained from this impressive performance.
