Outstanding Quarterback Takes the Helm as Starting Quarterback for Vikings in Pivotal Showdown with Bengals…

Nick Mullens is set to take on the role of starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in their crucial matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to an announcement by coach Kevin O’Connell on Tuesday.

Initially the team’s second-string quarterback, Mullens is now stepping into the starting position, becoming the fourth different starting quarterback for the Vikings in a seven-game stretch. Despite the quarterback rotation, the team remains in a strong position to secure an NFC wild-card playoff spot.

Mullens, who made a return from the injury reserve in Week 11 after recovering from a back injury, played a key role in the recent 3-0 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. He took over from Joshua Dobbs in the fourth quarter, leading the team’s sole scoring drive. Coach O’Connell expressed confidence in Mullens, commending his skills, preparation, and effectiveness in executing the game plan with limited repetitions.

While O’Connell has not yet decided on Mullens’ backup for the upcoming game on Saturday, both Jaren Hall and Joshua Dobbs will be in uniform. Mullens, with 17 NFL starts in his career, previously played for the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers, holding a record of 5-12 in his starts.

Reflecting on the quarterback situation, O’Connell acknowledged Dobbs’ contributions, particularly in leading the team to three wins after Kirk Cousins’ injury. However, the decision to start Mullens for the upcoming game was emphasized. The Vikings, now slightly above .500, are optimistic about Mullens’ performance, especially if star receiver Justin Jefferson, who was a limited participant in Tuesday’s practice, is available in Cincinnati. It’s worth noting that running back Alexander Mattison and right tackle Brian O’Neill did not participate in practice due to ankle injuries.
