Houston Texans Long Snapper Named Walter Payton Man of the Year Nominee…

Houston Texans Long Snapper Jon Weeks has been nominated for the prestigious 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, a recognition that goes beyond on-field excellence to highlight players’ contributions to their communities. Weeks, an undrafted free agent who joined the Texans in 2010, has been a constant presence amid numerous changes in the team, including seven head coaches and various starting quarterbacks.

Despite his consistent and flawless performance in snapping on punts and kicks, Weeks has often gone unrecognized. However, on Tuesday, it was officially announced that he is the Texans’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, an honor that takes into account both on-field achievements and players’ efforts to make a positive impact in their communities.

Texans Chairman and CEO Cal McNair commended Weeks, describing him as a leader who sets an example for others. McNair expressed pride in Weeks’ contributions to the team and the community, emphasizing his more than a decade-long impact on those around him. On the field, Weeks holds a unique record, being the sole player since 2010 to snap on every extra point, field goal, or punt. With 222 consecutive games, he is also the longest-tenured player in Texans history.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Weeks has actively participated in community initiatives, including the Houston Texans Community Huddle Ticket Program and hosting an annual holiday shopping spree for 25 kids in collaboration with Child Advocates. He, along with his wife Amanda, also brings Thanksgiving dinner to patients at Texas Children’s Hospital’s Heart Center.

In response to the nomination, Weeks shared his perspective on giving back, echoing the values instilled by his family. He expressed his hope that his legacy extends beyond his athletic career, with people remembering him as a good teammate and a caring individual who aimed to improve Houston.

As part of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, all 32 nominees, including Weeks, will receive a donation of up to $55,000 in their name to a charity of their choice. The overall award winner, to be announced during NFL Honors on February 8, will receive a $250,000 donation for their chosen charity. Notable past recipients of the award include former Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, recognized in 2017 for his fundraising efforts in support of Hurricane Harvey recovery.
