Darcy Kuemper Returns to Capitals’ Net Despite Lindgren’s Hot Streak

Darcy Kuemper is set to return as the starting goaltender for the Washington Capitals in their upcoming game against the Buffalo Sabres, despite the recent impressive performances of Charlie Lindgren.

Kuemper, who has been sidelined for the past two weeks due to an injury sustained in a November 8th overtime loss to the Florida Panthers, will reclaim his position as the number one starter.

During Kuemper’s absence, Lindgren took over and excelled in four out of the last six games for the team. In the Capitals’ last two outings, Lindgren demonstrated exceptional play, prompting questions about whether he would continue to be the preferred starter.

However, head coach Spencer Carbery has decided to reinstate Kuemper for the upcoming game against the Sabres.

Kuemper’s season statistics include a 3-3-2 record, a 3.07 goals-against average, and a .892 save percentage. In contrast, Lindgren, with three fewer starts, boasts a 4-1 record, a remarkable 2.01 goals-against average, and a .940 save percentage. Despite these impressive numbers, Carbery and the coaching staff believe in the importance of rotating goaltenders throughout the demanding 82-game schedule.

Lindgren recently made headlines by starting two consecutive games against the Columbus Blue Jackets, a deviation from the usual arrangement with Kuemper as the starter. Carbery acknowledged the optics of the situation but emphasized the necessity of utilizing multiple goaltenders over the course of the season.

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan praised Lindgren’s current hot streak, noting his exceptional performance last year as well. MacLellan expressed hope that Lindgren would maintain this level of play throughout the remainder of the season.

The Buffalo Sabres, with a 5-4-1 record in their last 10 games, will face the Capitals, who boast an impressive 8-1-1 record in the same span. Kuemper’s history against the Sabres has been challenging, as he allowed a total of 10 goals in his two starts against them last year. Despite this, the Capitals remain confident in Kuemper’s abilities as they look to secure another victory.
