The Philadelphia Phillies are considering pursuing a Cy Young Award-winning free agent to fill the void left by Aaron Nola’s potential departure. As MLB free agency is about to begin, there is speculation that the Phillies will target a Cy Young winner in the open market.
This hinges on the assumption that their own free agent pitcher, Aaron Nola, is indeed leaving the team, as suggested by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Despite the Phillies’ desire to retain Nola, it appears that a significant gap remains in their contract negotiations, making it increasingly unlikely that he will stay. So, when the free agency period officially begins, who will the Phillies set their sights on?
There has been a lot of talk and speculation about the Phillies’ plans in the free agent market, including which pitchers might be a good fit for the team. One name that has been mentioned within the general manager community is Blake Snell, who is about to win his second Cy Young award.
Snell, who recently played for the San Diego Padres, had a remarkable season with a 14-9 record, the best 2.25 ERA in the majors, and 234 strikeouts in 180 innings, despite issuing the most walks with 99.
He previously won the AL Cy Young in 2018 and is a strong candidate to win the NL Cy Young this season. Snell would be an excellent addition to the Phillies’ rotation and a worthy replacement for Nola, forming a formidable 1-2 punch alongside Zack Wheeler.
The success of the Phillies in acquiring Snell remains to be seen, but we should soon have a clearer picture of their intentions.
