Five Marlins Transition to Free Agency With Injury Updates and Player Move…

Latest News On November 2nd, right-handed pitcher David Robertson, first baseman Yuli Gurriel, and shortstop Joey Wendle all officially became free agents, just one day after the World Series concluded.

Additionally, on the same day, designated hitter/outfielder Jorge Soler chose to decline his player option for the 2024 season, thus becoming a free agent as well. Soler’s impressive All-Star season featured 36 home runs and 75 RBIs.

On October 31st, outfielder Jonathan Davis, left-handed pitcher Enmanuel De Jesus, and right-handed pitcher Jeff Lindgren were outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville, thereby opening up three spots on the 40-man roster. Davis, who had been reinstated from the 60-day injured list before this transaction, opted for free agency. He had been in recovery from a right knee injury since his meniscus surgery on July 6. De Jesus and Lindgren had their contracts selected toward the end of the season to provide pitching depth due to a depleted staff.

Injury Updates

Right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcantara, who underwent Tommy John surgery, is not expected to return until 2025. The discomfort initially arose during his September 3 start against the Nationals, leading to a diagnosis of a right forearm flexor strain. Subsequently, an MRI revealed a right UCL sprain. Although he began a rehab assignment in Triple-A Jacksonville on September 21, he had to halt it due to forearm tightness.

Right-handed pitcher Eury Pérez, dealing with left SI joint inflammation, is expected to return in 2024. Pérez was placed on the injured list on September 23, with the discomfort in his lower back affecting his pitching mechanics. He pitched 45 more innings compared to the previous season, ending the year with a 5.19 ERA in four September starts.

Outfielder Avisaíl García, who had a left hamstring strain, is also expected to return in 2024. He missed more than two months with left back tightness this season and underwent an MRI on August 23, which revealed the left hamstring strain. García had previously landed on the injured list twice with the same injury in 2022.

Right-handed pitcher Tommy Nance, recovering from a left oblique strain, is projected to return in 2024. Nance is currently rehabbing and playing catch in Jupiter, Florida, following his injury in Triple-A Jacksonville on September 6. He had already missed a significant portion of the season with a right shoulder strain before being activated off the 60-day IL on August 23.

Left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers, dealing with a right lat strain and left biceps strain, is also expected to return in 2024. He began playing catch in late September after experiencing a setback when he partially tore his lat while warming up for a rehab start on June 10. Rogers last pitched in the Majors on April 19, initially landing on the injured list due to a left biceps strain.

Right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes, who had a left hip impingement, is projected to return in 2024. Barnes was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 28 and continues his hip rehab. The initial recovery timeline for resuming baseball activities was three months after he slipped on the mound in mid-May against San Francisco, leading to the hip impingement.

Right-handed pitcher Anthony Bender, who underwent Tommy John surgery and was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 15, has made progress by throwing a bullpen session on September 29 and also throwing live batting practice.

Right-handed pitcher Max Meyer, who also underwent Tommy John surgery, is currently rehabbing at home in Minnesota. Meyer consulted with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on July 24 after experiencing right elbow soreness, but an MRI revealed no structural damage. Meyer underwent Tommy John surgery on August 9, 2022, after exiting his second MLB start on July 23, having thrown only 10 pitches.

In the Minor Leagues, right-handed pitcher Sixto Sánchez is working on his throwing program with Triple-A Jacksonville. Although he was initially scheduled for a bullpen session on September 15 and another outing with Double-A Pensacola on September 17, he did not participate. Sánchez had a previous setback in June due to slight shoulder soreness following an extended spring camp game.
