Why Whit Merrifield and Toronto Blue Jays Opt Out of $18 Million 2024 Option, Opening Path to Free Agency…

Merrifield and the Toronto Blue Jays have chosen not to exercise their $18 million mutual option for the 2024 season, which means that Merrifield, who plays as both a second baseman and an outfielder, will now have the opportunity to enter free agency.

In lieu of the option, Merrifield will receive a $500,000 buyout. This option was initially part of a two-year contract that was worth $14.25 million, covering salaries of $7 million in 2022 and $6.75 million in the current year. Additionally, there was a $4 million increase in his salary due to his absence from the injured list for less than 109 days in 2022.

Merrifield, who was acquired from Kansas City on August 2, 2022, is 34 years old and posted a .272 batting average this season, along with 11 home runs and 67 runs batted in.

Here are some of the Minors’ most popular jerseys…

In the Minor Leagues, there is a wide variety of jerseys to explore, each with its unique significance. These jerseys can represent the town they’re from, a favorite food, the local culture, or even an important cause. As affiliations with parent clubs grow longer, more teams are using jerseys as a way to connect with their roots and engage with fans. And, of course, they’re not just meaningful; they’re also visually appealing.

MiLB.com and MLB.com are celebrating National Jersey Day by showcasing some of the best-selling jerseys from MiLBStore.com. These jerseys feature alternate designs, theme nights, Copa de la DiversiĆ³n, and classic home jerseys. Let’s take a look at a few of them:

  1. Eugene Emeralds The Eugene Emeralds’ jersey tells the amusing tale of a 45-foot whale that washed ashore in 1970, leading to a memorable attempt to dispose of it. In 2018, the Giants’ High-A affiliate turned this incident into a theme night and designed a jersey with playful elements, including a whale in the “a” and a dynamite “l.” The background design adds depth and tranquility. The brand was nominated for the best alternate identity at the MiLB Awards, and it has helped turn a historical event into an important conversation about marine life conservation.
  2. Norfolk Tides Norfolk celebrated its Filipino American community with a heritage night in 2019 and decided to create a jersey that pays homage to one of the most beloved Filipino foods: lumpia. This spring roll-inspired jersey features a blue background, red and gold lettering, and a prominent image of lumpia on the sleeve. The jersey became popular not only in Norfolk but also nationwide, with fans from Hawaii placing orders. It was nominated for the MiLB Awards’ alternate identity of the year.
  3. Rocket City Trash Pandas Rocket City’s jersey design honors the area’s NASA history with a twist, featuring a furry space cadet. Fans love this home jersey for its branding and the cute raccoon tail design. The black and red lettering is complemented by electric blue piping, and an American flag-planting raccoon sits as a sleeve patch, adding to its popularity.
  4. Nashville Sounds The Sounds’ Brewskis jersey celebrates the local community and their affiliation with the Milwaukee Brewers. This jersey, which features a navy and yellow color scheme, was created to pay tribute to the burgeoning brewing industry in Nashville. The jersey proved to be a hit in 2023, selling record numbers and offering fans a fresh and stylish option.
  5. Chattanooga Lookouts The Lookouts’ jersey is all about the city, abbreviating Chattanooga to “‘Nooga.” This unique jersey showcases the city’s pride with a color scheme of red and black, reflecting the Lookouts’ connection to their community since 1885. The eyes-only cap completes the distinctive look.
  6. Tacoma Rainiers Tacoma’s jersey offers a simple and classic look that has been the team’s primary jersey since 2015. The timeless design reflects the club’s values of a beautiful and clean look with minimal accent colors. Fans have continued to embrace this classic look over the years.
  7. Indianapolis Indians The Indianapolis Indians, the longest continuously operated team name in the Minors since 1902, celebrate their home city with the Circle City jersey. This navy jersey features script mirroring the “Visit Indy” font and a sleeve patch reflecting the downtown map. The jersey’s popularity led to record sales in 2023.
  8. Toledo Mud Hens The “Ugly Christmas Sweater” jersey created by the Mud Hens for their Christmas in July weekend became a fan favorite. The jersey combines the fun of ugly Christmas sweaters with a baseball twist, featuring Santa Muddy and the historic High Level Bridge.
  9. Charlotte Knights Charlotte introduced pinstriped home uniforms with black pinstripes as a nod to their parent club, the White Sox. The color palette was carefully selected to match other pro sports teams in Charlotte, creating a sense of unity and belonging in the city.
  10. San Jose Giants Single-A San Jose adopted the Churros identity as part of the Copa de la DiversiĆ³n initiative. This jersey honors the beloved stadium figure, Hipolito “Paul” Cerda, known as “Super Churros Man.” The black jersey with orange piping and yellow details features a churro character on the sleeve, holding a cinnamon stick like a bat. The character’s hat pays homage to the region’s agricultural history, and the jersey has become a fan favorite.
