Philadelphia Phillies Face Critical Decisions with Free Agents and Arbitration-Eligible Players for the Upcoming Season…

The Philadelphia Phillies are currently facing decisions regarding their free agents and arbitration-eligible players for the upcoming season.

Apart from their two longest-serving players, Aaron Nola and Rhys Hoskins, the Phillies have two more free agents in Craig Kimbrel and Michael Lorenzen. They also have Scott Kingery, whose contract can be bought out for $1 million.

The Phillies’ top priority this offseason is to either re-sign Aaron Nola or find a suitable replacement for him. The situation with Rhys Hoskins hinges on whether Bryce Harper is prepared to return to right field after his Tommy John surgery, or if he should transition to first base.

Bryce Harper’s position preference will play a significant role in determining whether the Phillies decide to retain Hoskins or explore other options, such as shopping Nick Castellanos.

As for Craig Kimbrel, it appears unlikely that he will return to the Phillies despite their need for right-handed late-inning relief help. Kimbrel had a successful regular season but had a couple of critical meltdowns during the NLCS, resulting in Phillies losses. While he was an All-Star and earned his 400th career save as a Phillie, his performance in 2023 may make his return less likely.

Michael Lorenzen also seems inclined to find a better fit elsewhere, as the Phillies have a starting rotation with four returning pitchers and may be in the market for a top-tier starter.

Scott Kingery has finished his guaranteed contract and will be bought out for $1 million as he looks for a new team.

Regarding arbitration-eligible players, the Phillies have eight individuals eligible for salary arbitration. Jeff Hoffman is in his final arbitration year, while the others are in their second year of arbitration or are first-timers. The Phillies may choose not to offer contracts to certain players before the non-tender deadline on November 17.

The Phillies may seek a more productive and cost-effective bench outfielder than Jake Cave. Dylan Covey, although not on the playoff roster, could be retained due to his cost-effectiveness and ability to provide depth. Catcher Rafael Marchan’s status could influence Garrett Stubbs’ future as the Phillies’ backup catcher.

If arbitration-eligible players and the team cannot reach a contract agreement by January 12, they must submit salary figures, and a hearing is scheduled between January 29 and February 16.

If no agreement is reached by the hearing, a panel of arbitrators will determine the player’s salary for the upcoming season.
