Peter Wright secured a dominant 10-4 victory over Michael Smith at the European Darts Championship in Dortmund, advancing to the quarterfinals.
Despite briefly holding an 8-0 lead, Wright admitted he didn’t feel comfortable throughout the match. He considered himself fortunate that his darts were on target and that Smith didn’t perform at his best.
Maintaining concentration became challenging for Wright as he neared victory with an 8-0 lead. He missed several opportunities to close out the match but remained focused, managing to hit important trebles and doubles.
Wright also emphasized that he wasn’t as ruthless as players like MvG (Michael van Gerwen) and Phil Taylor, who have a more aggressive approach to the game. He didn’t have the same desire to completely crush his opponent, and he believed he got away with it.
Despite having a mediocre year, Wright had recently shown signs of improvement, reaching the quarterfinals of the World Grand Prix before his success at the European Championship. He humorously mentioned that his performance was improving, allowing him to “pay the bills.”
