Nigel Clough Reflects on Thrilling Victory and Challenges Amid Mansfield Town’s Unbeaten Streak

Nigel Clough, in the wake of Mansfield Town’s 2-1 victory over Walsall, described it as the most hard-fought match in their remarkable 19-game unbeaten streak at the start of the season.

Clough expressed his delight in the team’s exceptional performance while also emphasizing the need to capitalize on the numerous scoring opportunities they create in order to avoid tense conclusions.

He commented on their unbeaten run, calling it “absolutely incredible” and expressed his satisfaction with today’s win, deeming it as challenging as any of their previous successes this season. However, he lamented the failure to secure a clean sheet and mentioned that they should have put more goals on the scoreboard. Clough attributed this issue to not hitting the target often enough and not making the right passes at the right moments.

Clough recognized the opposition’s determination and their ability to cause problems, even with limited shots on target. He highlighted the opponent’s resilience, drawing a parallel with their recent performance against Newport where they came back from being three goals down.

The winning goal in the match was scored by right wing back Jordan Bowery, and Clough remarked that it was about time their full backs contributed on the score sheet. Despite it being an unconventional goal, Clough believed it was well-deserved.

In the first half, Mansfield Town lost Lucas Akins due to a head injury. Clough mentioned that Akins was taken to the hospital for a checkup, and he stressed the importance of not taking chances when it comes to player safety, especially with head injuries, even if the player initially felt fine but later decided to come off the field.
