Detroit Red Wings head coach provide latest updates on defenseman’s mysterious injury…

Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Jeff Petry is dealing with an injury, as revealed by head coach Derek Lalonde. The specific nature and cause of the injury remain unclear at this time.

However, it doesn’t appear to be a severe injury. This announcement is noteworthy because Petry was a healthy scratch in a recent game against the Calgary Flames after playing in the previous game against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.

It’s likely that this injury occurred off the ice or during practice and might explain his absence from the Sunday game.

Jeff Petry, aged 35, has had a strong start to the season with two assists in four games for the Red Wings, which is consistent with his historical average of around 0.5 points per game over the past six seasons.

He has also performed well defensively with a 5v5 expected goals against per 60 of 2.36. However, his expected goals for per 60 of 2.41 is more average, resulting in an overall expected goal share of 50.52%.

With Petry unavailable, the Red Wings will maintain the same defensive lineup from their last game, which included Olli Maatta and Justin Holl. Maatta has one assist in five games, and Holl has three assists in five games.

Petry, originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the 2006 NHL draft, has played for several teams over 14 seasons, including the Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Red Wings.

He is currently in the third year of a four-year contract with a $6.25 million cap hit, a deal he signed with the Canadiens in the 2020 offseason, with only $2,343,750 of that cap hit attributed to the Red Wings’ cap sheet.
