Former Leeds United and Reading shares insights into why Portsmouth’s season reached a critical juncture during their victory over Carlisle…

A former player from Leeds United and Reading, Conor Shaughnessy, has revealed the pivotal moment in Portsmouth’s season, which he believes occurred during their dramatic late victory over Carlisle.

Shaughnessy, who scored the decisive goal in stoppage time, thinks that the Blues were at risk of ending their 24-match unbeaten league streak against Paul Simpson’s team. However, they managed to secure a 1-0 win at Fratton Park, extending their lead in League One by three points.

Despite Shaughnessy being the late hero for the second time this month, he emphasized the significance of a crucial save by Will Norris, who denied Dan Butterworth’s last-gasp attempt.

Shaughnessy, who joined Portsmouth from Burton in the summer, believes that the outcome of the game is cause for celebration, as it marked their seventh consecutive win, even though they were far from their best performance. Looking ahead, he suggested that this match could be remembered as a turning point in their season.

Shaughnessy mentioned, “It’s significant victories and key moments. When Will made that save, these are the moments we might reflect on. They hit the post a couple of times, and Will’s save was crucial. It could easily have ended in a draw, and on a bad day, we could have lost. So, I believe we’ll see this as a very important three points.”

He further stated that even though the second-half performance was not their best, winning in such circumstances demonstrated the strength of the team. Portsmouth’s win over Carlisle was their fifth goal scored in second-half stoppage time this season, resulting in eight valuable points.

Shaughnessy attributed this impressive statistic to the team’s collective conviction that they can remain a threat until the final whistle. He credited the togetherness and never-say-die attitude in the dressing room and explained that everyone gives their all until the end.

He highlighted the crucial role of teamwork and the mindset of the players and staff, which had developed over the past couple of months.
