How Leicester’s Injury Update Validates Contingency Plan for Wingers…

The latest injury news from Leicester City has highlighted the success of their contingency plan for wingers. Here’s the breakdown.

Not too long ago, especially after the summer transfer window closed, Foxes of Leicester (FoL) criticized Leicester City for having an excess of players in certain positions.

Specifically, their goalkeeping department was overcrowded, with five senior goalkeepers on the roster, which was seen as a waste of talent and resources and potentially disruptive to team dynamics.

This sentiment was reinforced by the fact that goalkeepers like Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen struggled to fit into Enzo Maresca’s system. It’s not necessarily Maresca’s fault; the club should have considered selling, loaning, or offloading two of the five goalkeepers back in August or July.

However, an interesting twist of fate has worked in Leicester’s favor. Whether it was by design, good fortune, or simply avoiding bad luck is a matter of interpretation.

While they have too many goalkeepers, having an abundance of wing assets has turned out to be a valuable luxury for the East Midlands team.

This became evident when breakout star Kasey McAteer got injured, requiring alternative options. Players like Abdul Issahaku Fatawu and Yunus Akgun stepped up, and Marc Albrighton is also available as a backup if needed.

Additionally, Wanya Marcal-Madivadua from the Under-21s could be recalled if necessary. Furthermore, Stephy Mavididi has proven to be a Premier League-caliber winger, which is a pleasant surprise.

The good news is that McAteer is expected to return to action soon, and Maresca doesn’t anticipate Akgun missing any matches.
