Portsmouth’s manager, John Mousinho, has provided an update on their player recruitment efforts, shedding light on the extensive process currently underway.

Mousinho has disclosed that the club’s football operations team has compiled a substantial list of ’50 or 60′ potential candidates for each position, showcasing the rigorous work of the recruitment team.

Furthermore, Mousinho has outlined the strategy for narrowing down this extensive list to identify players who can truly make a positive impact on the team. The recruitment process is not limited to the upcoming January transfer window but extends to future summer transfer periods as well.

Mousinho has hinted at the possibility of adding a winger to the squad in the coming year, and loans may also be considered as a viable option.

The process remains a work in progress, with a substantial amount of work yet to be undertaken, as the 37-year-old manager explains how the process will evolve in the future.

Mousinho stated, “Our focus is currently on the recruitment side, with our scouts and recruitment staff identifying potential targets. For each position, we currently have long lists in place, which will eventually be refined into shortlists. The ‘long list’ is indeed extensive, sometimes comprising 50 or 60 names, depending on the stage of the process.

Once we reach around 20 candidates, that might be considered a shortlist. A proper shortlist, however, usually includes four to six players who are the top contenders, aligning with our preferred style of play.

This doesn’t mean the other 20 aren’t of interest, but some may be ruled out due to availability, moves to other clubs, or contractual factors. Then, we focus on the realistic prospects that we can bring in, and that’s when we conduct even more in-depth assessments.”
