Insider explains why Nike can’t make Tiger Woods a comfy pair of golf shoes …

The enduring question arises as to why Nike hasn’t been able to craft a pair of golf shoes comfortable enough for Tiger Woods, who still opts for FootJoy golf shoes.

When Tiger Woods made his return to the Masters following his car accident, he was sporting FootJoy golf shoes. What initially seemed like a minor shift from Nike has transformed into an ongoing footwear story spanning nearly two years.

Many people initially questioned Woods’ decision to switch from Nike to a pair of Premier Series Packards in April, speculating that it might only be a temporary change.

This switch appeared to be driven by his need for more stability to navigate the challenging terrain of Augusta National after his near-fatal car crash and the reconstruction of his right leg.

Scheffler & Fleetwood

Tiger Woods has been closely associated with Nike since he turned pro in 1996. From footwear to clubs, Nike’s iconic swoosh was inseparable from his image. Even his famous chip-in at The Masters in 2005 featured a Nike logo on the golf ball.

Woods’ connection with the brand was so significant that even the current World No.1, Scottie Scheffler, and Ryder Cup hero Tommy Fleetwood continue to wear his signature shoes. Given his reported $200 million contract with Nike in 2013, one might expect the company to go to great lengths to have its top star donning their shoes again.

The question remains: Why hasn’t Nike been able to design golf shoes suitable for Tiger Woods, even after almost two years since he started wearing FootJoys? It seems that despite his prolonged use of FootJoy, Nike hasn’t managed to create shoes that meet his standards.

While only Woods knows the exact reasons behind his reluctance to return to Nike, it’s apparent that he isn’t satisfied with the solutions Nike has offered. For now, it looks like FootJoys are his preferred choice.

FootJoy

As of 2023, Tiger Woods was seen wearing a pair of all-black FootJoy Premier Series Packard golf shoes during his recent public appearance at Pebble Beach’s new Par-3 course, The Hay. His son, Charlie Woods, also wore the same shoes. These Premier Series Packards are made of full-grain Pittards leather and feature a VersaTrax+ outsole for exceptional traction on various surfaces. They include a soft EVA midsole for increased underfoot cushioning, enhanced comfort, and stability.
