Carlton Palmer has shared his thoughts on Dejphon Chansiri’s future at Sheffield Wednesday, as the club’s owner faces growing scrutiny amid a challenging season.

The situation at Hillsborough has taken an unexpected turn, with the club’s fortunes declining rapidly after celebrating their promotion in May.

A tumultuous pre-season, off-field tensions, and a lackluster start to the Championship campaign have created a toxic atmosphere around the club.

Since their play-off final victory in May, Sheffield Wednesday has gone through three different managers.

First, Darren Moore was surprisingly dismissed in June, and his replacement, Xisco Munoz, was hired just a month before the season opener against Southampton. Despite making twelve summer signings, it appeared that Wednesday wasn’t adequately prepared for the challenges they now face.

Munoz was let go after a 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on October 3rd, and former Bayern Munich, Germany, and Southampton coach Danny Rohl has taken over as the new manager.

Dejphon Chansiri’s tenure as owner, which began in 2015, has been marked by significant ups and downs, including two failed play-off attempts in 2016 and 2017, a relegation, and points deduction in 2021.

This tumultuous summer of 2023 has added to the pressure on Chansiri, with fans calling for new ownership due to poor on-field performances, high ticket prices, and perceived mismanagement. Chansiri announced his intention to sell the club and refused to invest further money despite criticism from fans.

Carlton Palmer, a former Wednesday defender turned pundit, believes that recent events make it a suitable time for Chansiri to consider new investment for the club.

Palmer pointed to the increased pressure on Chansiri due to the sacking of Darren Moore and rising ticket and matchday prices. While Chansiri had previously distanced himself from selling the club, Palmer suggests that he may now be open to offers.

Palmer, however, emphasized the importance of expressing opinions respectfully and condemned any threats against Chansiri’s family. He acknowledged that certain sections of the fan base have turned against Chansiri, and if that continues, Chansiri has indicated he may be willing to step down.

Prospective buyers have shown interest in Wednesday, according to The Athletic, although a sale may take time to materialize. The club is currently facing relegation, with a significant need for investment in the squad, stadium, and training facilities. On the pitch, new manager Danny Rohl will oversee his first game against Watford in the near future.
