Walsall boss Mat Sadler is pleased with his team’s response in their 1-1 draw against Forest Green in the EFL Trophy, following a tough loss to Sutton.

After falling behind in the 51st minute to a Tyrese Omotoye goal, the Saddlers had a strong second half performance.

Ross Tierney missed a penalty in the 60th minute, but Isaac Hutchinson equalized with a beautiful first-time finish in the 67th minute.

Sadler was impressed by the second-half performance and the team’s recovery from the 4-0 defeat at Sutton. He noted that they had felt the pain of that loss and now need to carry that into their upcoming game against Gillingham.

The first half of the match lacked intensity and quality from both sides, but things improved in the second half. However, the night ended on a sour note for Walsall as they lost 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

Despite the result, Sadler praised Douglas James-Taylor for taking his halftime instructions on board and contributing to Walsall’s recovery. He emphasized the need for the team to not just maintain their shape but to also affect the game positively from within it.

Sadler also highlighted the impact of substitutes Danny Johnson and Brandon Comley. Johnson played a key role in setting up Hutchinson’s equalizer and showcased the depth of attacking options at Sadler’s disposal. He praised Johnson’s energy and creativity, particularly around the box.”
