Wayne Rooney set to add former Man United icon to Birmingham coaching staff…

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United’s leading goal scorer of all time, is poised to assume a coaching role at Birmingham City following his departure from DC United in the MLS.

After his stint with Derby County, where he performed well despite the team’s relegation, Rooney decided to move to the United States. However, he has now resigned from his position just over a year after taking it up.

In his statement regarding his decision to leave DC United, Rooney expressed his desire to return to England, and it appears that a move to the Midlands is in the works. Additionally, there are rumors that the iconic Manchester United forward plans to include a former Red Devils legend as part of his coaching staff.

According to Aaron Paul of BBC Radio 5 Live, John O’Shea, along with former Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, is expected to join Rooney’s coaching team. O’Shea has previously held coaching positions at Stoke City and Reading and currently serves as an assistant coach to Stephen Kelly for the Republic of Ireland national team.

Birmingham City is set to part ways with John Eustace, despite a strong start to the season, and Eustace has been linked to more high-profile coaching opportunities, according to the Daily Mail.

Surprisingly, Wayne Rooney is the leading candidate for the role if Eustace departs, with the new owners, Knighthead Capital, led by Tom Wagner, keen on having a more prominent figure in charge.

Rooney, a legendary figure at Manchester United, has made a promising start to his managerial career, gaining experience in challenging environments in the Championship and MLS. In April 2022, there were reports that he was offered a position on Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff when the Dutchman was appointed at Manchester United, but he declined the offer, as reported by StrettyNews.

Rooney has made it clear that he has aspirations for a managerial career, stating in a 2022 interview with Sky Sports, “Of course I would,” when asked if he would consider the Manchester United job if it were offered to him. He added, “At the moment, obviously my focus is on Derby County and securing our position in the Championship, but Manchester United and Everton are the two clubs that are very close to me.
