Former footballer Peter Crouch, who previously played for Portsmouth, Stoke, and Southampton, has responded to rumors suggesting he’s making a return from retirement.

Crouch’s message to enthusiastic fans was, “Things are not as they appear.”

The speculation arose when League One club Burton Albion shared an image of the 42-year-old holding their team shirt with his name and number 15 on it.

The image was posted on social media with a caption hinting at a comeback, along with an alarm clock and the date of Monday, 09.10.23.

This tweet garnered significant attention, leading to speculation that Crouch might be returning to professional football four years after retiring.

Burton Albion, currently 18th in the League One standings with a low goal-scoring record, had an upcoming match against Cambridge United scheduled for the same date mentioned in the tweet. As a result, many curious Burton fans may have rushed to the team’s website or ticket office to secure tickets for the suddenly intriguing game.

However, Crouch decided to temper the speculation by taking to social media and keeping fans in suspense about his plans. He posted a cryptic message, saying, “Things are not what they seem. Stay tuned for more on Monday… #BackStronger #BAFC.”

Since retiring from professional football, Peter Crouch has built a successful career in the media, working as a pundit for TNT Sports and launching his popular podcast, “That Peter Crouch Podcast,” in 2018, which is now in its fifth series. He also briefly served as the director of football at non-league club Dulwich Hamlet before stepping down at the end of the 2022-23 season.

During his playing career, Crouch scored 35 goals in 88 appearances in two separate stints with Portsmouth. The club spent a total of £10.5 million on his services but recouped £14 million when he transferred to Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur after leaving Fratton Park.

In addition to Portsmouth, Crouch also played for other clubs, including QPR, Southampton, Norwich, Stoke, and Burnley.
