The potential January departures of three Barnsley FC players…

FLW examines the trio of Tykes who could be on their way out in 2024.

Barnsley narrowly missed out on promotion from League One last season, losing in the play-off final at Wembley to their South Yorkshire rivals, Sheffield Wednesday.

Following that disappointment, they also lost manager Michael Duff to Swansea City and brought in Neill Collins as his replacement.

In the current season, after 10 matches, Barnsley has gathered 16 points, but they are struggling for consistency, possibly due to the sale of key players over the summer.

Notably, Mads Andersen and Liam Kitching were sold for significant sums. This raises the question: could more players leave in the upcoming January 2024 transfer window?

Let’s examine three Tykes players who are the most likely candidates to depart midway through the current campaign.

Devante Cole:

In simple terms, while Barnsley is in League One, they are a club known for selling their players when they receive fair offers. Their standout player currently is Cole, who has had a fantastic start to the 2023-24 season, scoring nine goals in 10 appearances in League One.

After netting 15 times last season, it’s only a matter of time before Andy Cole’s son surpasses that tally. Other clubs, such as Middlesbrough and Stoke City, are reportedly interested in him ahead of the January transfer window.

With Cole’s contract expiring in the summer of 2024, it’s possible that Barnsley may accept a decent offer for him.

Callum Styles:

If Styles wants to maintain his regular playing time for the Hungarian national team, he might need to compete at a higher level than League One.

The 23-year-old attracted interest from clubs like Watford over the summer, following his loan spell with Millwall in the 2022-23 season. However, no move materialized, and Styles currently remains at Oakwell.

Barnsley has Styles under contract until 2025, but if a significant offer comes in during January, the club might need to consider their options.

Matty Wolfe:

Wolfe has been with Barnsley since childhood, and during the 2021-22 season, he made 16 appearances in the Championship, spending the first half of the campaign in the Danish second tier.

Unfortunately, a knee injury in February sidelined the 23-year-old, but he is expected to return to action before the end of the year.

However, with fierce competition for places at Oakwell, it might be beneficial for Wolfe to go out on loan or even consider a permanent move, especially since his contract expires next year.”
