Peterborough United boss has criticized his players following their Carabao Cup defeat to Mansfield Town…

The Peterborough United manager, Darren Ferguson, has expressed remorse following his post-match outburst after their Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of Mansfield Town on Tuesday.

Ferguson admitted that he went too far in his criticism of his players, accusing them of lacking courage, especially after a strong 70-minute performance turned sour, leading to Mansfield’s advancement to the last 16 via a penalty shootout.

While Ferguson stood by some of his comments, he specifically regretted referencing last season’s playoff disappointment at Hillsborough and suggesting that the players were fortunate to have him as their manager.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that he still maintains an excellent rapport with his players.

Ferguson attributed his outburst to his emotions taking over, acknowledging his tendency to lose his temper and become frustrated when the team deviates from their usual routines.

He stressed the need for quicker thinking and movement when facing high-pressing opponents, without altering their style of play.

He conceded that using the term ‘bottle jobs’ was too harsh and that mentioning Hillsborough and the players’ luckiness was an emotional reaction, clarifying that his comments were solely about the Mansfield game and not reflective of their overall performance, as the team has been playing well.

He highlighted the positives from the Mansfield match, especially their dominance for 70 minutes.

Ferguson expressed his belief in the squad’s potential but recognized that it’s currently unrealized. He mentioned a constructive meeting with the players, acknowledging the challenge they face and the importance of patience, given their youth.

Looking ahead, Peterborough United is set to face Bristol Rovers in a League One match on Saturday, with ‘two or three’ players uncertain due to injuries sustained at Mansfield.

Additionally, their right-back and captain, Peter Kioso, will be suspended.
